As part of the HouseEurope! citizens’ initiative, the CNCI, in collaboration with LUCA, is inviting architects Franklin Azzi (Franklin Azzi) and Nicola Delon (Encore Heureux Architectes) to share their experience in the rehabilitation of industrial sites. This evening will be an opportunity to discuss the technical, environmental, social and cultural aspects of this type of project.

“Reversible Rehabilitations” by Franklin Azzi

From its earliest projects, Franklin Azzi has been committed to the rehabilitation of industrial sites, developing a methodology known as “correctness”: minimal in its expression but maximal in its application. This approach is characterized by a strong rationality, meticulous attention to detail, and the valorisation of craftsmanship. Rejecting technological overkill in favour of a return to “common sense”, the architect prioritizes discernment, relevance, and reason over effect. This sobriety creates space for appropriation, lived experience, and personal impressions. This vision has given rise to numerous urban and architectural projects, including the renovation of the Montparnasse Tower and the re-qualification of the Beaupassage and Champs-Élysées – Ponthieu districts in Paris. To rehabilitate in a reversible way means to embed a building in a virtuous cycle of transformation, in which the architect is both the inheritor of a history and agent of its future evolution. It is a humble stance, where the architect’s skill ensures the building’s relevance to both its current and future uses.

Since 2001, ENCORE HEUREUX Architectes has been exploring the notion of generalist architecture, intervening at various scales on spatial, social, and urban challenges with a gentle radicality. Their work on transforming heritage buildings and industrial sites has received numerous awards, including the Réhab XX Prize—a recognition of exemplary rehabilitation projects of 20th-century heritage buildings—awarded by the French Ministry of Culture in 2021.The agency has developed several cultural and innovation facilities for public, private, and non-profit clients, always placing usability and comfort at the core of their concerns. Their projects integrate an ambitious environmental approach, focusing on the reuse of existing buildings, the repurposing of materials, and civic engagement through the open programming of spaces and their functions.

On December 4, we’ll be celebrating Saint Barbara, patron saint of miners in particular. Who was she? How was she celebrated? Why do we pay tribute to her?
The CNCI’s fanzine workshop on December 3 will be an opportunity for children to discover this symbolic figure of our industrial heritage.With artist Irina Moons, young participants will create their own fanzine. Using a variety of techniques including drawing, collage and silkscreen printing, the children will create their own magazine to tell us about their legend of Saint Barbara.

The fanzines will be printed in limited quantities, and will be available on December 4 at the big Sainte Barbe party organized by the CNCI and KuFa.

As part of the European Heritage Days, the CNCI is organising a visit to an iron ore mine on Saturday 5 October 2024.

Discover or rediscover an essential site linked to the industrial history of our region: the Hussigny-Godbrange Iron Mine.

A lively 2-hour tour! Take a train down to the mine, then a van, and watch a demonstration of how the mining machinery worked, with mine blasting (loading, bolting, etc.). You’ll experience the rhythm of the mine (darkness, noise, dust) as the mechanical equipment moves just a few metres away from you.

PROGRAMME :
9:00  – Meeting point at the Bei der Giedel restaurant car park – Fond de Gras
9:15   – departure by bus
9:30  – arrival at the Hussigny-Godbrange Iron Mine, collection of miner’s helmet and lamp.
12:00 – return by bus for lunch at the Restaurant Bei der Giedel – Fond de Gras
