MinettREMIX was a key project organised by our non-profit, in collaboration with a range of partners, in the frame of the European Capital of Culture Esch2022. The project consisted of a central exhibition which gave visitors a taste of the diversity of the southern region of Luxembourg known as the Minett and its industrial heritage – its past, present and future.
The exhibition brought together different themes :
- The Network of the Centre national de la culture industrielle
A look at our 17 partners in the southern region committed to industrial heritage and who are part of our network. - Fraen am Minett – vu A-Z
A look at various aspects related to the lives and stories of women of the region from the industrialisation of Minett to the present day. - Paysages du fer
A look at the radical transformations of the local landscapes caused by the mining and steel industry. This section was a teaser for a publication that appeared in autumn 2022. - The Minett Trail & and its Kabaisercher
A look at the 90 km long national hiking trail that runs through the Minett UNESCO Biosphere Reserve and the creation of the Kabaisercher (tourist lodgings) that resulted from an ambitious architectural competition. - Re-retour de Babel
A look at the migratory trends of the Minett, presenting women and men who have settled in the region. Photos from the mythical exhibition entitled Retour de Babel, a key event of the European Capital of Culture 2007 which was hosted on the same site, were selected. This part referred to an exhibition that took place in the Centres d’Art in Dudelange in mid-September 2022, entitled Re-Retour de Babel, which revisited and reinterpreted this subject by presenting the second generation of immigrants from Minett.
Location & Opening Hours :
- Hall Fondouq and Aciérie on the NeiSchmelz site in Dudelange – access via the route de Thionville (behind the Skatepark)
Complementary activities were organised on the same site, as well as at some of our partner sites in the South. - The exhibition was open from 7 May to 31 October 2022, Wednesdays to Thursdays (except bank holidays), 14.00 – 19.00 o’clock.
Free entry, guided tours were available on request

As part of our project MinettREMIX, we are continuing, among other things, the seminar series entitled HallzWeNeed, initiated and launched by our founding members in 2018. With this 6th edition, we are back to our starting point: discussing the future of the Blowers Hall (Halle des Soufflantes), the emblematic industrial building in Esch-Belval. Last year, our association Industriekultur-CNCI came up with a concept, called Science in the City, which was presented to local political decision makers.
In this seminar, we will present our concept focused on community outreach and the extension of the research and higher education activities of the Belval site, and concrete citizen projects. We have also invited local institutions already present in Belval, such as LISER and LIST to showcase their ideas. We will discuss whether such a coherent approach to outreach efforts, along with concrete citizen projects, could be a promising solution for the future of the Blowers Hall.
Location: Halle des poches à fonte, Esch-Belval
Time: 14.00 – 17.30
Free entry

in collaboration with Coopérative de Recherche et Art, l’Administration de la nature et des forêt et Minett UNESCO Biosphere
In October 2020, the southern region of Luxembourg known as the Minett became a biosphere reserve within the framework of UNESCO’s Man and the Biosphere programme. The rich industrial past and natural beauty of the region, its biodiversity and numerous nature reserves make the Minett UNESCO Biosphere a model area for sustainable development.
This event is a continuation of the seminar series entitled HallzWeNeed, initiated by our founding members. For this 7th edition, our non-profit organisation Industriekultur-CNCI is offering a more playful programme – a contemplation boot camp in nature on the theme of the Minett landscape, substantially transformed by industry.
The day starts early with a coffee and croissant offered by the Brasserie Schmëdd. Afterwards, participants will have the option to participate either in a guided discussion (in Luxembourgish) during a recording of the collaborative podcast Minett Mash-up with guests Sergio Carvalho (Luxembourgish architect) and Pol Zimmermann (responsible for the centre nature et forêt Ellergronn) or in a yoga class (in English) in a former industrial hall at the centre nature et forêt Ellergronn, offered by the local organisation Yoga am Minett.
The morning continues with a 9 km guided hike with Pol Zimmermann, the local forest ranger and employee of the Nature and Forestry Administration, around the Ellergronn nature reserve. The hike leads past various relics that remind us of our industrial history: an old funicular, the St. Joseph quarry, the open-cast mine Intermoselle and the Prince Henri mine. After the hike, participants have the opportunity to discover the centre nature et forêt Ellergronn and its activities, including: the exhibition Transition NOW, the Nature Centre, the Museum of the Cockerill Mine and the art installations L’Heure Bleue (by Sergio Carvalho & Dimitri Mallet) and Wäiss Kaul (by Franck Miltgen). The day will end with a lunch – vegetarian or non-vegetarian salad with dessert, served by the Brasserie Schmëdd.
