The Train 1900 is a historic tourist railway connecting Pétange with Fond-de-Gras, in the heart of Luxembourg’s former mining region. Operated by the AMTF Train 1900, it offers visitors an opportunity to discover the area’s railway and industrial history aboard historic locomotives and passenger coaches.
The route follows a former line of the Prince Henri railway network. From its platform beside Pétange railway station, the train travels through the Prenzebierg landscape, stops at Fuussbësch near the Giele Botter nature reserve and continues to the historic Fond-de-Gras station.
The Train 1900 takes its name from steam locomotive no. 8, which was built in 1900 for the Differdange steelworks. The locomotive arrived at the site in 1973 and hauled the association’s first steam trains. The first public journey took place on 4 August of the same year.
The AMTF Train 1900 originated from an initiative launched in 1969 by a group of young railway enthusiasts who wanted to preserve the last steam locomotives still operating in the steelworks of southern Luxembourg. Today, the association operates the standard-gauge railway section of the Minett Park and maintains and restores its extensive collection of historic railway equipment.
The collection includes steam locomotives, diesel locomotives, railcars, passenger coaches, freight wagons and various items of equipment formerly used by the steel
industry. Some vehicles remain in operational use, while others are preserved, displayed or undergoing restoration.
These activities rely largely on the work of active members and volunteers. Driving trains, maintaining tracks, restoring mechanical equipment, carrying out carpentry and painting work, documenting the collection and welcoming visitors all require a wide range of complementary skills.
The Train 1900 operates regular services during the tourist season and also organises themed days, guided visits and special journeys for private, educational and professional events.
