Founded in 1991 as a citizens’ initiative to preserve the buildings of the former Cockerill mine in Ellergronn, the association adopted the name Entente Mine Cockerill in 1995 and was officially established as a non-profit organization (ASBL) in 1996. Since then, it has been actively committed to safeguarding and promoting this emblematic site of industrial heritage in Esch-sur-Alzette.
Located on the site of the former Katzenberg mine, surrounded by the Naturschutzzentrum Ellergronn, the association is committed to preserving the memory of the mining past and passing this heritage on to future generations. Thanks to the dedication of its volunteers, several elements have been restored and highlighted, including the former forge, the “Salle des Pendus,” and a small museum dedicated to the history of the mine.
The museum, created by the association’s volunteers, displays a wide range of objects linked to the work of miners, such as lamps, tools, fossils and other artefacts illustrating everyday life in the galleries. Through these efforts, Entente Mine Cockerill helps bring the region’s industrial history to life and highlights the crucial role mining played in Luxembourg’s economic and social development.
Through guided tours and awareness activities, the association invites the public to discover this unique heritage site and to gain a deeper understanding of the lives and work of the miners who shaped the identity of the Minett region.
