MEET OUR NETWORK | Minett UNESCO Biosphere

Recognised by UNESCO in 2020, the Minett UNESCO Biosphere is Luxembourg’s first and only biosphere reserve within the “Man and the Biosphere” programme.

Located in southern Luxembourg, the region developed around iron ore extraction and the steel industry, whose legacy still shapes the landscape and territorial dynamics today.

The Minett Biosphere demonstrates how a territory deeply marked by human activity can evolve towards a model combining biodiversity conservation, sustainable development and industrial heritage valorisation.

It serves as a space for experimentation and learning, supporting projects related to research, environmental education and citizen participation.

Today, the region combines natural areas, former industrial wastelands, urban zones and heritage sites, offering a complex and evolving reading of the territory.

Main missions
• Preserve ecosystems and biodiversity
• Promote sustainable economic and social development
• Enhance natural and industrial heritage
• Support research, education and awareness
• Encourage stakeholder and community involvement

Through this approach, the Minett UNESCO Biosphere contributes to balancing human activity and the environment.
