The history of the Slate Museum began in 1992 with the founding of the non-profit organization “Les Amis de l’Ardoise”, established to preserve and promote the slate heritage of the Greater Region. Since then, the museum has gradually developed on the site of the former Haut-Martelange slate quarries. A decisive step was taken in June 2018, when the Government Council approved the development and use of the underground chambers for educational, cultural, and tourist purposes. Since October 2022, the Slate Museum has affirmed its mission as a place for transmitting and showcasing the region’s emblematic industrial heritage. True to its motto, “Lieweg Geschicht – Geschicht erliewen”, the museum continues to grow as an interpretation centre for this heritage.
Today, visitors can explore impressive underground galleries, watch live demonstrations of traditional slate-working techniques, and learn about the daily life of slate miners through a varied cultural and educational program. The museum also offers a rich calendar of activities, including guided tours for all ages, creative workshops, rides on the industrial train, tastings of traditional miner meals, as well as seasonal events such as the Koll an Aktioun music festival or a Christmas market.
